A buddy of mine, Victor Charles, showed me how to blend two textures together yesterday you will need to install GIMP to do this and you must first convert .dds's into jpegs (i use the Xnview program for that,...save as Jpeg [name]), import them into GIMP, them convert them back to .dds with the dxtex.exe...sounds difficult but it really isnt...
THESE ARE ALL FREE TOOLS AT NO COST TO USER....
heres the link to get Xnview (converts .dds to jpegs)
www.xnview.com
heres the link to get GIMP... (blends textures)
gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html
***IMPORTANT***you will need to first install the GTK +2 for windows,...enter the language you want, click ok,... then install the GIMP version 2.2.8 afterwards....
hers the link to get dxtex (converts jpeg's to .dds')
www.vietcong-coop.net/site?node_id=6&action=show_data&p_id=299&cls_fileclass=01.100&ordercol=bin_file&ordertype=ASC&row=1
Now heres the steps...
First you need to open XnView, then select file--->browse, then select the folder with your textures in it,....choose the .dds you want, and click file---> save as (your .dds name.JPG) and save it to your desktop....do the same steps for the other .dds you want to blend with the first...
Now close out XnView and Open up GIMP 2.2.8
1. In the GIMP Box select File--->open--->(jpeg image you converted from .dds)
2. Then in the Box that opens after first step click file--->open as layer--->(then you select the other jpeg image you converted from .dds)
3. Then in same box click layer--->mask--->add layer mask--->layers alpha channel--->OK
4. Then same box click layer--->mask--->show layer mask (this will make the screen in the box turn white...)
5. Then in same box click layer--->colour--->invert (this will turn the box black)
6. Then go to "The GIMP" box to left of black box screen, and click the "Fill with a colour Gradient" icon...
7. Now you will go to the box on the right (black screen) and drag the plus sign from top to bottom...(this will turn bottom of box white and the color will turn darker as it reaches the top (black))...
8. then click layer--->mask--->uncheck the show layer mask...
9. then click layer--->merge down
10. then click file--->save as (name it whatever you wish).JPG to your desktop...
11. it will say you cannot save unless image is exported, you then click export, then another screen appears with a quality slider, dont mess with that just click ok....now the blended .JPEG is transfered to your desktop...
Finally open up your dxtex and search for that .JPEG on your desktop and save it as a .dds to your desktop and you are finished...cut/paste that into your textures folder and tell 3dsmax to find it and you now have a smooth transformation between textures in your custom map(s)...
